Qualified AMED for HSE divers and recreational dive certificates (PADI and BSAC)

Awarded ‘Diving Medical Officer Level 1’ by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2014.

“Having dived recreationally from the age of 12 years, I have the benefit of personal insight into the degree of physical and psychological fitness required to dive safely.

I fulfil the requirements as an AMED but furthermore as a practising anaesthetist I am accustomed to assessing levels of fitness using appropriate medical equipment”.

HSE Diving

The Diving at Work Regulations 1997 (DWR) require you to pass a thorough medical examination by an Approved Medical Examiner of Divers (AMED), before starting training or working in the UK as a professional diver.

You will need to complete the medical questionnaire and have it signed by your GP before the initial assessment (this does not apply to renewals).

Please see the link below for the required form.

Diver fact sheet and medical questionnaire

If you pass the medical you will be issued with a certificate of medical fitness to dive, which is valid for 12 months. This must be renewed annually and will include a fitness test.

Recreational Diving

Recreational diving agencies in the UK and abroad require completion of a diver’s medical questionnaire prior to diving. Please see the link below. If any boxes tick ‘yes’ then a medical is required. At this medical you will be required to supply the following:

  1. Recreational Diving Medical Declaration:

    PADI

    BSAC

  2. Recent discharge summaries and hospital results (bloods, x-rays, scans, blood, and respiratory tests).

  3. GP summary of your medical condition (GP print out or NHS app access).

Diving Medical Costs

HSE Dive Medical £160 - £180

Payment must be made on attendance at your appointment by cash or by BACS.
